Build Understanding with Our Interactive Fraction Wall Game!
Are you looking for a free and effective way to help your child understand fractions? Welcome to Fraction Wall Fun, an online maths game that turns the abstract concept of equivalent fractions into a hands-on, visual puzzle! This game is the perfect tool for children in Key Stage 2 who are learning how different fractions can have the same value.
The game challenges children to use a variety of fraction “blocks” to build a wall that is the exact same length as a target fraction. By seeing, for example, that two 1/4 blocks are the same size as one 1/2 block, children gain a deep, visual understanding of how fractions work, making it a powerful learning experience.
How to Play
- Get Your Target: At the top of the screen, you will see a “Target” block, like “1/2” or “3/4”. Your goal is to match this length exactly.
- Choose Your Bricks: Look at the “Supply” area at the bottom. This is your pile of fraction blocks (e.g., 1/3, 1/6, 1/8).
- Build Your Wall: Click (or tap) on the supply blocks to add them to “Your Wall.” Watch as your wall grows!
- Remove Blocks: Made a mistake? No problem! Just click on a block in your wall to remove it and send it back to the supply pile.
- Check Your Answer: When you think your wall is the perfect match for the target, click the “Check Answer” button to see if you are correct!
Learning Objectives & Curriculum Links
Fraction Wall Fun is a valuable educational activity designed to support key learning objectives within the UK’s Key Stage 2 (KS2) maths curriculum.
- Target Age Group: This game is ideal for children in Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 (ages 7-10). It’s a fantastic introduction to equivalent fractions and a great way to consolidate learning.
- Key Maths Focus:
- Equivalent Fractions: The core of the game directly supports the Year 3 and Year 4 curriculum aim to “recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators.”
- Visual Representation of Fractions: This game is all about moving away from abstract numbers and seeing fractions as real parts of a whole. It helps children build a strong mental model of how fractions relate to each other.
- Adding Fractions (Conceptual): By combining blocks (like 1/4 and 1/4), children get an intuitive, visual introduction to the concept of adding fractions with the same denominator.
Tips for Teachers and Parents
This interactive fraction wall is a brilliant resource for both the classroom and home learning.
- For Teachers: Use Fraction Wall Fun on an interactive whiteboard as a fantastic whole-class starter. You can challenge students to find multiple ways to create the target fraction. It’s an excellent tool for promoting mathematical discussion and works perfectly as an independent activity on tablets during a maths rotation.
- For Parents: Fractions can be one of the trickiest topics for children. This game provides a visual and playful way to explore the concept without the pressure of getting things wrong. You can support your child by talking about the blocks: “How many of the little 1/6 blocks do you think will fit? Is a 1/3 block bigger or smaller than a 1/4 block?”
