Case Clue: Solving Two-Step Problems
Detective Digits challenges Year 4 investigators to crack cases using multi-step reasoning. Maths isn't just about sums; it's about following the trail of clues (numbers) to find the truth (the answer).
What is a Two-Step Problem?
A two-step problem requires you to perform two separate calculations to reach the final answer. You can't just guess!
Example Case:
"A shop had 100 apples. They sold 20, then bought 50 more."
- Step 1 (The Sale):
100 - 20 = 80 - Step 2 (The Delivery):
80 + 50 = 130 - Verdict: They now have 130 apples.
Investigation Tips
- Read the Report Twice: Don't rush. Missing a word like "more" or "less" can ruin the case.
- Write it Down: Use the "Detective's Notebook" on screen to track the intermediate number.
- Check Your Logic: Does the answer make sense? If a shop sold apples, should the number go up or down?
