Feed the Monster
A Monster Appetite for Numbers!
Meet Munch! He's a very hungry monster, but he's also a very picky eater. Feed the Monster is a delightful, interactive counting game designed for Early Years (EYFS) and Year 1.
It focuses on the bridge between Subitising (instantly recognizing a number of objects, like dots on a dice) and Counting (1, 2, 3...).
👺 How to Play
-
🎲
Check the Menu Look at the thought bubble. Does Munch want 3 burgers? Or is he showing a dice pattern of 5?
-
🍔
Prepare the Meal Tap the food items to add them to the plate. Count out loud as you tap! one... two... three!
-
😋
Feeding Time If you get the number right, Munch eats the lot. Watch out for a big burp!
📚 Curriculum Focus (Number)
Feed the Monster covers crucial early number skills:
- One-to-One Correspondence Matching one spoken number to one physical action (tapping the food).
- Subitising Recognising small quantities (1-6) without needing to count them individually (e.g., standard dice patterns).
- Cardinality Understanding that the last number counted represents the total quantity.
🧠 Learning through Play
Young children learn best when there is a narrative. They aren't just "doing sums"; they are "taking care of a friend".
The immediate feedback (Munch eating joyfully or looking confused) helps self-correction without the fear of failure.
👨👩👧 Snack Time Maths
Real Life Feeding:
- At snack time, ask: "Can you eat 3 grapes?"
- "How many crackers on your plate? I'll eat one... now how many?"
- Play with a toy: "Teddy wants 4 spoons of yoghurt."
