A Royal Lesson in Fractions
"Calculations fit for a King!"
How to Play
Welcome to the Royal Kitchens! Your job is to serve the King exactly what he asks for. The King demands a specific fraction of a quantity. For example:
"Serve me 3/4 of these 12 chicken legs!"
To succeed, you must:
- Calculate: Work out how many items make up the requested fraction (e.g., 3/4 of 12 is 9).
- Select: Click on the food items to place them on the King's platter.
- Serve: Press the "Serve Feast" button to check your answer.
Learning Objectives
This game is tailored for Year 4 students and covers key National Curriculum objectives:
- Solve problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities.
- Find the effect of dividing a one- or two-digit number by 10 and 100 (in advanced levels).
- Understand the relationship between division and fractions (finding 1/4 is dividing by 4).
Maths Strategy
Step 1: Divide by the bottom
To find a fraction of a number, first divide the total quantity by the denominator (bottom number).
Example: 1/4 of 12 -> 12 รท 4 = 3.
Step 2: Multiply by the top
Then, multiply your answer by the numerator (top number).
Example: 3/4 of 12 -> 3 x 3 = 9.
