High Low Hero

Saving the City, One Number at a Time!

The city is in trouble (at least, the numbering system is)! High Low Hero asks children to leap across skyscrapers by identifying numbers that are One More or One Less.

Targeting Year 1 and 2, this game builds rapid fluency in understanding the position of numbers relative to each otherβ€”a foundation for addition and subtraction.

🦸 How to Play

  • πŸ™οΈ
Check Your Position Look at the number on the current building (e.g., 15).
  • πŸ“‘
Read the Signal The mission will say "Find 1 More" (Go Up!) or "Find 1 Less" (Go Down!).
  • πŸ’₯
Super Jump Tap the correct building to jump. 1 More than 15 is 16. 1 Less than 15 is 14.

πŸ“š Curriculum Focus (Number)

High Low Hero is designed for these KS1 objectives:

  • More and Less Given a number, identify one more and one less.
  • Counting Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.
  • Number Facts Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20.

🧠 Number Adjacency

To add or subtract effectively, a child must instinctively know which numbers are "neighbours".

Knowing that 19 is next to 20 without counting "1, 2, 3...19" is a huge leap in number sense. This game builds that automaticity.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Everyday Heroics

Staircase Challenge:

  • "We are on step 5. If we go UP one, what step is that?" (One more).
  • "We are on step 10. If we go DOWN one, what step is that?" (One less).
  • Use street numbers while walking. "We are at number 42. What will the next house be?" (Usually 44, which introduces skip counting!).

Mission Accomplished. City Saved.
