Jungle Gym

Swing Through the Missing Numbers!

Deep in the math jungle, Monkey needs your help to swing from vine to vine! Jungle Gym is an algebra-readiness game that asks children to solve the "Missing Piece" of an equation.

Targeting Year 2, it flips the script. Instead of just "5 + 5 = ?", it asks "5 + ? = 10" or "10 ? 2 = 5". This builds deep mathematical understanding.

๐Ÿ“š Curriculum Focus (Problem Solving)

Jungle Gym challenges children to think backwards and verify their answers:

  • Inverse Operations Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.
  • Mathematical Symbols Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (โ€“) and equals (=) signs.
  • Commutativity Show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot.

๐Ÿง  Critical Thinking

Students often get into a habit of just assuming they need to "add the numbers".

By asking "Which symbol goes here?", this game forces them to stop, analyze the relationship between the numbers (10 ___ 2 = 8? It got smaller, so it must be subtraction!), and prove it.

Kitchen Detective:

  • "I had 5 biscuits. Now I have 4. What did I do?" (Subtract/Eat 1).
  • "I had 2 apples. I went to the shop. Now I have 5. What happened?" (Added/Bought 3).
  • Use these stories to help them see math in real life actions.
