Mixed Number Mixer: Potion Class

Alchemy & Arithmetic

Bubble and Brew! The Grand Wizard demands precision. In Mixed Number Mixer, you must combine ingredients to create the perfect potion. But the recipes are written in mixed numbers!

This game visualizes the process of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. You can't just throw everything in the pot; you need to handle the whole numbers and the fractions separately (or convert them!).

⚗️ The Alchemist's Method

  • Whole Numbers First: Add the big bottles (wholes) together.
  • Common Denominators: You can't mix "thirds" of a toad with "quarters" of a root. Make them the same!
  • Regrouping: If your fractions add up to more than 1, pour it into a new whole bottle.

Wizard Certification (Year 6)

Calculation Add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers, using the concept of equivalent fractions.
Equivalence Use common factors to simplify fractions; use common multiples to express fractions in the same denomination.

👨‍👩‍👧 Potions Master's Tip

There are two ways to brew:

  • "Keep them separate: Add wholes, then add fractions."
  • "OR make them 'Improper': Turn $1 \frac{1}{2}$ into $\frac{3}{2}$ before starting."
