Otter Ocean

Learn Odd & Even Numbers in an Underwater Adventure

Dive into the deep blue with Otter Ocean, the refreshing way to learn about Odd and Even numbers. Designed primarily for Year 2 students, this game combines swimming mechanics with number sorting to reinforce a key property of numbers.

Help Oliver the Otter collect the correct pearls while avoiding the jellyfish! It's an underwater test of number sense and reflexes.

🦦 How to Play

  1. Check the Rule: At the start of the round, you'll be told to collect either ODD numbers (1, 3, 5...) or EVEN numbers (2, 4, 6...).
  2. Swim!: Use your mouse or finger to guide the otter through the ocean.
  3. Collect Pearls: Swim into the clams holding numbers that match your rule. Collecting a correct number earns points and a happy crunch sound!
  4. Avoid Hazards: Don't touch numbers that break the rule, and watch out for stinging jellyfish!

📚 Curriculum Focus (Year 2)

Otter Ocean supports the Year 2 National Curriculum objective for Number and Place Value:

  • Odd and Even Recognise the parity of numbers (odd or even).
  • Pattern Recognition Understand that even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, and odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
  • Recall Rapidly categorize numbers as they appear on screen.

🧠 Why Learn Odd & Even?

Understanding parity (odd/even) is essential for mental division and recognizing patterns.

  • It helps with division: Only even numbers can be halved into whole numbers.
  • It's a checking strategy: "I added two odd numbers, so the answer must be even. My answer is odd, so I must have made a mistake."

👨‍👩‍👧 Tips for Parents

The "Pairing" Test:

"Get a pile of socks (or coins). Count out 5. Can you put them all in pairs?"

Child: "No, there is one left over!"

Parent: "That means 5 is an ODD number. Odd numbers always have an 'odd one out'!"
