Pattern Palace
Master Logical Reasoning & Sequences in a Royal Setting
Unlock the gates to the Pattern Palace! This regal logic game helps Year 1 and 2 children develop critical thinking skills by recognising, identifying, and completing repeating patterns.
From simple "Red-Blue-Red-Blue" sequences to complex shape and colour combinations, players must predict what comes next to lower the drawbridge and enter the castle.
🏰 How to Play
- Observe the Bridge: A sequence of shapes or objects is displayed on the drawbridge (e.g., Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Circle...).
- Find the Missing Piece: Look at the empty slot. What comes next in the pattern?
- Select Your Answer: Choose the correct shape from the options provided.
- Enter the Castle: If you are correct, the drawbridge lowers, the trumpets sound, and you advance to more difficult patterns!
📚 Curriculum Focus (KS1)
Pattern Palace supports the development of logical reasoning, a key component of the National Curriculum for Mathematics and Computing:
- Sequencing Recognise and create repeating patterns with objects and shapes.
- Prediction Predict what comes next in a sequence based on established rules.
- Geometry Identify and name common 2D shapes (rectangles, squares, circles, triangles).
- Problem Solving Reason about the properties of shapes and their arrangement.
🧠 Why Patterns Matter
Pattern recognition is often called the "heart of mathematics." It allows children to bring order to chaos and make predictions.
Identifying that a sequence repeats (A-B-A-B) is the first step towards understanding more complex mathematical rules, such as times tables (which are patterns of numbers) and algebraic functions.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Make Patterns at Dinner:
- "Fork, Spoon, Fork, Spoon... what comes next?"
- "Pea, Carrot, Corn, Pea, Carrot, Corn... can you make that pattern on your plate?"
- "Let's make a sound pattern: Clap, Clap, Stomp. Clap, Clap, Stomp. Join in!"
Designed for UK Year 1 & 2. Compatible with White Rose Maths "Geometry: Position and Direction".
