Picture Power
Capture the Correct Count in this Camera Challenge
Say cheese! Picture Power turns counting into a photography expedition. Perfect for Reception and Year 1, this game asks children to scan a busy scene and "snap" a photo of a specific group of items.
It combines counting skills with observation and category sorting ("Find the birds", "Find the red cars"), mimicking real-world counting scenarios.
📸 How to Play
- Read the Assignment: The camera mission will appear (e.g., "Find 4 birds" or "Find a group of 3").
- Scan the Scene: Move your viewfinder around the scattered items.
- Count Carefully: Found some birds? How many are there? 1... 2... 3... 4. Perfect!
- Take the Shot: When the viewfinder is over the correct group, click to snap the photo!
📚 Curriculum Focus (EYFS & KS1)
Picture Power supports the Early Learning Goals and Year 1 National Curriculum:
- Counting Objects Count to and across 20, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.
- Cardinality Understand that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells you how many there are in total.
- Categorisation Sort objects into categories (e.g. animals vs vehicles) before counting.
🧠 Real World Maths
Abstract numbers (like "5") can be hard to grasp. Picture Power roots counting in physical objects, reinforcing that "5" can mean 5 birds, 5 cars, or 5 pencils.
This helps children generalize their counting skills from the classroom to the wider world.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Go on a Photo Hunt:
- Give your child a phone or tablet (or make a cardboard camera).
- "Can you take a picture of 3 flowers?"
- "Can you find 2 red toys?"
- Review the photos together and recount the items to check.
