OPERATOR MANUAL: Place Value Pipes
Core Functionality
The Divid-O-Tron 3000 is designed to test your ability to divide efficiently. In Year 4, efficient division means sliding digits!
When you divide by 10, digits move ONE place to the right.
When you divide by 100, digits move TWO places to the right.
Examples
35 ÷ 10
= 3.5
7 ÷ 10
= 0.7
42 ÷ 100
= 0.42
Why Digits Move?
Imagine the numbers are on a conveyor belt. The decimal point is a fixed laser at the center. Dividing makes numbers smaller, so they slide to the right, past the decimal point, into the Tenths and Hundredths columns.
Curriculum Objectives (UK Year 4)
- Find the effect of dividing a one- or two-digit number by 10 and 100.
- Identify the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths, and hundredths.
