Potion Commotion
Brew Mathematical Magic in this bubbling puzzle game!
Welcome to the laboratory, young alchemist! Potion Commotion challenges KS1 and KS2 students to mix the perfect mathematical brew.
The cauldron demands a specific number. It's your job to select the correct ingredients from the shelf that add up (or subtract down) to the target. Careful calculation creates a magical explosion; mistakes might just leave you with a glob of goo!
๐งช How to Play
- Check the Recipe: Look at the number floating above the cauldron (e.g., "Make 10").
- Select Ingredients: Drag bottles from the shelf into the pot. Each bottle has a number.
- Combine Them: If you need 10, you could drag a 5 and another 5, or a 7 and a 3.
- Watch the Reaction: If the total matches the target, the potion succeeds! If not, try again.
๐ Curriculum Focus (KS1 & KS2)
Potion Commotion reinforces core arithmetic skills:
- Number Bonds Recall number bonds to 10, 20, and 100 instantly.
- Mental Addition Add one-digit and two-digit numbers mentally.
- Inverse Operations Use subtraction to check addition (e.g., Target 10 - Ingredient 3 = Need 7).
๐ง The Alchemy of Maths
By presenting number composition as "mixing ingredients," this game helps children visualize that numbers are made up of smaller parts.
There are often multiple ways to make the same number (e.g., 5+5=10, 2+8=10, 1+9=10). Discovering these combinations builds flexible number sense.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Tips for Parents

- "This jug holds 100ml. If I pour in 50ml, how much more space is left?"
