Ranch Handbook
Wrangling Numbers in the Wild West
Rounding Ranch brings the Year 5 curriculum to the frontier! Mastering rounding is an essential skill for estimation and mental arithmetic. In this game, students must round large whole numbers (up to 1,000,000) to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000. Quick thinking is required to herd the cattle into the correct pen!
The Golden Rules
- Identify the target column (e.g., if rounding to 100s, look at the hundreds column).
- Look at the digit to the right.
- 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 → Round DOWN (Keep the target digit the same).
- 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 → Round UP (Add 1 to the target digit).
Example: Round 34,560 to nearest 1,000
1. Target: Thousands (4)
2. Digit to right: Hundreds (5)
3. Is 5 high or low? High!
Answer: 35,000
How to Play
A cow will appear with a number on it (e.g., 452,198). Look at the wooden sign to see the rounding instruction.
- Round to 10: Focus on the units.
