Shopkeeper Shrew

Open for Business! Learn to Count Change.

Step behind the counter! In Shopkeeper Shrew, you run the busiest store in the forest. Animals come to buy treats, but they never have the exact money.

Your job is to calculate the change using real UK Coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1). It's the perfect way for Year 2 to Year 4 students to master money.

🛒 How to Play

  1. Check the Sale: The customer (e.g., a Fox) wants an apple for 20p.
  2. Take the Payment: They hand you a 50p coin.
  3. Calculate the Difference: 50p - 20p = 30p change needed.
  4. Count it Out: Click the coins in your till to make 30p (e.g., a 20p and a 10p). Press "DONE".

📚 Curriculum Focus (Money)

Shopkeeper Shrew directly addresses the "Measurement - Money" targets:

  • Coin Recognition Recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value.
  • Giving Change Find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money and calculate change.
  • Mental Subtraction Practical application of subtraction (e.g., 100 - 45) in a meaningful context.

🧠 Real-World Maths

Money is one of the most important real-world applications of maths. This game simulates the pressure and process of a real transaction, building confidence for when they visit a real shop.

👨‍👩‍👧 Tips for Parents

"Shopkeeper" at Home:

  • Set up a mini-shop with toys or snacks. Label them with prices (e.g., 10p, 50p).
  • Give your child a pile of coins (real or fake).
  • "I want to buy this teddy. Here is £1. How much change do I get?"

Designed for UK Years 2, 3 & 4. Compatible with White Rose Maths "Money".

Giving Change & Summing Totals

Step deeply into the woods to Shopkeeper Shrew's Store! In this cozy woodland shop, Year 2 children learn the value of money by serving customers and calculating the correct change.

Handling transactions is a vital real-world skill. This game focuses on simple addition and subtraction with money, helping children understand that receiving change is finding the difference.

🛍️ Curriculum Focus (Money)

  • Simple Addition Add together small amounts of money to find a total cost.
  • Giving Change Calculate change from 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 using subtraction or counting up.

🧮 Parent Tips

Next time you buy a small item, let your child handle the money. Ask: "If I give 50p for this 30p apple, how much change should I get back?" Counting up (30... 40, 50 - that's 20p!) is often easier than subtracting.

Stocked for Year 2 Shopkeepers.
