Turbo Trains
Full Steam Ahead with Equivalent Fractions! 🚂
The station is busy, and the trains are leaving fast! Turbo Trains is a high-speed maths game that helps children master Equivalent Fractions.
Targeted at Year 3 and Year 4, this game reinforces the vital concept that different looking fractions (like 1/2 and 2/4) can represent the same value.
🎫 How to Play
- Watch the Engine: The train arrives with a fraction on the engine (e.g., 1/2).
- Scan the Platform: Look at the carriages waiting on the platform below.
- Find the Match: Spot the carriage with an equivalent fraction (e.g., 2/4 or 3/6).
- Load the Train: Tap the correct carriage to hook it up and send the train zooming off!
📚 Curriculum Focus (Fractions)
Turbo Trains keeps students on track with National Curriculum objectives:
- Equivalent Fractions Recognise and show, using diagrams and number families, equivalent fractions with small denominators.
- Fraction Simplification Understand that 4/8 simplifies to 1/2 by dividing numerator and denominator by the same factor.
- Multiplication Facts Use times tables to check equivalence (e.g., multiply top and bottom by 2).
🧠 The Concept of "Same Value"
Fractions can be confusing because the numbers change even when the amount stays the same.
By rapidly matching these pairs in a game context, students move past counting slices and begin to see the multiplicative relationship between numerators and denominators.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Kitchen Fractions:
- "If I cut this pizza into 2 slices and eat 1, that's 1/2."
- "If I cut it into 4 slices and eat 2, is that the same amount?" (Yes, 2/4 = 1/2).
- "Look at this chocolate bar. 4 squares out of 8 is half the bar!"
