Learn Ratios by Scaling Up Fun Recipes!
Welcome to Recipe Ratios! This fun and practical game is designed to make learning about ratio and proportion a piece of cake. By putting maths into the context of a real kitchen, we help children understand how these important skills are used in everyday life.
The challenge is simple: take a recipe for a certain number of people and work out the correct ingredient amounts for a different number of guests. Can you become a master chef and scale the recipe perfectly?
Why Learn Ratios with Recipes?
Putting maths into a real-world context is one of the best ways to help it stick. This game helps children to:
- See Practical Maths: It clearly demonstrates how ratios are used outside the classroom, making the concept less abstract and more useful.
- Strengthen Multiplication and Division: Scaling recipes up and down provides excellent, repetitive practice of core multiplication and division skills.
- Build Confidence: The instant feedback and fun theme create a positive learning environment where children can practice and improve without pressure.
For Teachers and Parents: Meeting Key Stage 2 Objectives
This game is a fantastic resource for supporting the National Curriculum for maths, especially for children in Key Stage 2 (KS2) who are getting to grips with ratio.
- Year 6: The curriculum requires that pupils “solve problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities where missing values can be found by using integer multiplication and division facts” and “solve problems involving the calculation of percentages [for example, of measures] and the use of percentages for comparison.” This game directly addresses the ratio objective by asking children to scale recipes up and down using simple multipliers (like halving or doubling), which is the foundation of understanding proportion.
Itβs an ideal activity for a lesson starter, a fun homework task, or just some engaging practice at home to build fluency and confidence.
