Data Detective
Crack the Code of Statistics!
Grab your magnifying glass! Data Detective turns dry statistics into a noir mystery. Children must interpret Pictograms, Block Diagrams, and Tally Charts to solve the case.
Targeting Year 2 statistics, this game moves beyond simple counting to "interpreting"βasking children to compare data sets and find the difference.

π Curriculum Focus (Statistics)
Data Detective is fully aligned with the Year 2 Statistics statutory requirements:
- Interpretation Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables.
- Many-to-One Ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing categorical data where symbols represent 2, 5 or 10 units.
- Comparison "How many more?" and "How many fewer?" problems.
π§ Data Literacy
We live in an age of big data. Learning to read a chart is as important as reading a sentence.
This game specifically traps the most common error: ignoring the key (e.g., counting 3 symbols as "3" when the key says "1 symbol = 2").
π¨βπ©βπ§ Field Work
Traffic Survey:
- Sit by a window or park bench for 10 minutes.
- Make a tally chart of car colours (Red, Silver, Black, Blue).
- "Which was the most popular colour? How many more Silver cars than Red?"
Case Closed: Year 2 Statistics.
