Data Dragon

Hoard the Treasure, Master the Data!

Enter the Dragon's Lair! Data Dragon is an immersive sorting and statistics game. The Dragon has a pile of mixed-up jewels, and he needs a Year 2 expert to organize his hoard.

This game is unique because it covers the entire data lifecycle: initially identifying and sorting raw data (the gems), recording it (tallying), and finally presenting it visually (pictograms).

🛡️ The Three Trials

  • 💎
Phase 1: Sorting The pile is messy! Drag the Rubies, Emeralds, and Sapphires into their matching chests. This teaches Categorization.
  • 📝
Phase 2: Tallying Count the gems in each chest. Mark a tally on the chalkboard for every gem. Remember: bundle in 5s (four lines and a gate)!
  • 📊
Phase 3: Visualizing Convert your items into a Pictogram. Drag gem stickers onto the chart to verify your totals.

📚 Curriculum Focus (Statistics)

Data Dragon provides an end-to-end simulation of the KS1 Statistics requirements:

  • Sorting Sort objects into categories and count the numbers in each category.
  • Tally Charts Record data using tally marks (grouping by 5).
  • Block Diagrams Construct simple pictograms and block diagrams.

🧠 Concrete to Abstract

Maths teaching follows the CPA model (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract).

Data Dragon follows this perfectly. You start with Concrete gems (movable objects). You move to Pictorial representation (the chart). Finally, you analyse the Abstract numbers (totals).

👨‍👩‍👧 Lair Logistics

Kitchen Cupboard Sort:

  • Tip out a bag of pasta or mix of cutlery.
  • Sort them: "Forks here, Spoons there."
  • "Which pile is the biggest? Can we arrange them in lines (a block graph) to prove it?"

Status: Gold Standard Educational Tool.
