Number Splat
The Fast-Paced Counting & Number Recognition Game
Get your throwing arm ready for Number Splat! This energetic counting game is perfect for Early Years (EYFS) and Year 1 students who are learning to recognise numbers and count objects rapidly.
By combining colourful visuals with satisfying "SPLAT" physics, counting becomes an exciting race against the clock (or a leisurely practice session), helping children build confidence with numbers 0 to 20.
🎨 How to Play
- Read the Target: A number or instruction will appear at the top (e.g., "Find 5" or "Count the spots").
- Spot the Match: Search the paint-splattered canvas for the blob that matches the target. This might be the numeral 5, the word five, or a blob with 5 dots.
- SPLAT!: Click or tap the correct blob to splat it! Accurate splats earn points.
- Level Up: As you progress, the game challenges you with larger numbers and different representations (digits vs. words vs. quantities).
📚 Curriculum Goals (EYFS & Year 1)
Number Splat directly supports the National Curriculum for younger learners:
- Number Recognition Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.
- Subitising Instantly recognise small quantities (e.g. dots on a dice) without needing to count them one by one.
- Counting Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1.
- Attention & Focus Develop sustained attention by searching for specific targets in a busy visual field.
🧠 The Power of Subitising
"Subitising" is the ability to look at a small group of objects (like 4 dots on a dice) and know how many there are without counting "1, 2, 3, 4".
Number Splat encourages this skill by presenting dot patterns that children must recognise instantly to achieve a high score. Strong subitising skills promote number sense and efficient arithmetic in later years.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Play "Spot the Number" in Real Life:
- "Can you spot the number 5 on that front door?"
- "How many red cars can you see? Splat them with your finger!" (Maybe don't actually touch strangers' cars!)
- "Look at this domino. How many dots? Don't count, just tell me!"
