Shape Detective
Uncover the Hidden Properties of Geometry!
Get your magnifying glass ready! Shape Detective turns geometry into a crime scene investigation. Perfect for Year 2 to Year 4, this game focuses on identifying shapes by their specific properties.
It asks students to look beyond the simple name (e.g., "Triangle") and observe the details: distinct vertices, parallel lines, lines of symmetry, and angles.
🔍 How to Play
- Receive the Case: The Chief will ask for a specific suspect (e.g., "Find the shape with 5 vertices").
- Examine the Evidence: A shape appears under the spotlight.
- Use the Magnifier: Hover over the shape to inspect corners and sides closely.
- Make an Arrest: Choose the correct classification from the options below. Is it a Pentagon or a Hexagon?
📚 Curriculum Focus (Geometry)
Shape Detective hits the key Geometry targets for Lower Key Stage 2:
- Properties of Shapes Identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line.
- Classification Compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.
- Vocabulary Use correct terms like "Vertex" (corner), "Parallel", and "Perpendicular".
🧠 Visual Analysis
Geometry is a visual subject, but it requires precise language. This game connects the visual property (seeing 5 corners) with the geometric term (Pentagon), bridging the gap between seeing and naming.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Shape Hunt:
- "I spy with my little eye... a shape with 4 right angles." (Window, Door, Book).
- "Can you find a cylinder in the kitchen?" (Baked beans tin).
- "How many lines of symmetry does a square plate have?"
Designed for UK Year 2, 3 & 4. Compatible with White Rose Maths "Properties of Shape".
