Spooky Spirits
Place Value Ghost Hunt! 👻
Don't be scared... be prepared! Spooky Spirits transforms Place Value into a spectral scavenger hunt.
Designed for Year 2, this game targets the crucial skill of partitioning two-digit numbers. Can you spot that the ghost labeled "53" has 5 Tens and 3 Ones?
🔦 How to Play
- Choose Your Mission: Focus on "Tens", "Ones", or a handy "Mixed" challenge.
- Receive the Clue: The prompt might say "Find ghosts with 4 Tens".
- Scan the Graveyard: Ghosts will float by with numbers (42, 14, 49, 84).
- Zap the Ghosts: Tap numbers like 42 and 49 (because they have 4 tens). Avoid 14 (only 1 ten)!
📚 Curriculum Focus (Place Value)
Spooky Spirits is directly aligned with the National Curriculum for Year 2:
- Place Value Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones).
- Partitioning Understand that 53 can be split into 50 and 3.
- Identifying Numbers Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations.
🧠 The Power of Partitioning
Understanding that a digit's value depends on its position (e.g., the '5' in 53 is worth 50, not 5) is a huge conceptual leap.
By rapidly identifying these components in a game setting, students build fluency and move away from counting by ones to thinking in blocks of tens.
👨👩👧 Tips for Parents
Ghost Hunting at Home:
- "Look at our house number (e.g., 24). How many tens? How many ones?"
- "I'm thinking of a number with 6 Tens and 2 Ones. What is it?" (62).
- Use 10p coins and 1p coins to make "Ghost Money" amounts.
Designed for UK Year 2. Compatible with White Rose Maths "Place Value".
