CEO Handbook: Year 5 Place Value Guide
Mastering Maths for Future Tycoons
Welcome to Tycoon Towers, the premier educational game designed to help Year 5 students master Number and Place Value. In the high-stakes world of business, precision is key. This game transforms the abstract concepts of large numbers and powers of 10 into a tangible, engaging corporate management simulation. By identifying digit values and navigating floors by powers of 10, players build the fluency required for the UK National Curriculum.
Understanding Place Value to 1,000,000
In Year 5, students must determine the value of each digit in numbers up to one million.
- The digit 7 is in the Hundred Thousands place.
- It represents 700,000.
- The digit 4 represents 40,000.
Counting in Powers of 10
Fluency in adding or subtracting 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000 is critical for mental maths.
How to Play
Inspector Mode: You will be shown a large number with one digit highlighted. Your job is to identify the value of that digit. Choose carefully—assets are at risk if you mistake 70,000 for 7,000!
Elevator Mode: Navigate the skyscraper by calculating the destination floor. You will be given a starting floor (e.g., 450,000) and an instruction (e.g., "UP 10,000"). Mental calculation is your key to the executive suite.
