Guide: The Architect's Handbook
Visualising Area through Counting and Multiplication
Area is the measurement of the space inside a two-dimensional shape. In the world of architecture, knowing the exact area of a room is vital for planning flooring, paint, and furniture layouts.
📐 Educational Focus
This game targets Year 4 National Curriculum objectives for Measurement:
- Find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares.
- Relate area to multiplication (the 'Pro Tip' below).
- Visualising composite shapes made of multiple rectangles.
How to Work the Blueprint
- Scan the Site: Look at the blue shape on your blueprint grid.
- Mark the Grid: Click each square inside the shape. A green tick helps you avoid double-counting!
- Verify: Check your "Current Estimate" on the left dashboard.
- Submit: Hit "SUBMIT PLAN" once your count is complete.
💡 Pro Mathematical Tip:
Architects rarely count one by one! For a rectangle, we multiply the Width by the Height. If a room is 5 squares wide and 4 squares high, the area is $5 \times 4 = 20$ squares. Try it on simple rooms to speed up your workflow!
